As We Revisit the Meaning of Patriotism and Loyalty
Tule Lake is at the heart of some painful decisions of what patriotism and loyalty means to Japanese Americans who were unjustly interned during World War II. Japanese Americans were facing difficult decisions during the war: whether to obey or challenge military exclusion orders; whether to answer, "yes, yes", "no, no" or answer at all to the government's loyalty questionnaire; whether to serve in the army or keep the family together; whether to demonstrate ones loyalty by opposing the constitutional injustices and indignities that were being heaped upon us or to go along with it all and absorb the injustices and indignities and show them that we can take everything they can dish out and even go the extra hundred miles as the 442nd did, to demonstrate how much we love this country. Was there a "right" then, is there is a "right" now?
For some, the events of September 11th make this year's theme all the more timely. Are there connections to make to current times? Tule Lake Pilgrimage 2002 revisits the complicated ideas of patriotism and loyalty in a time of turmoil, as we honor all of the difficult choices people had to make to survive.
As we tour the remnants of camp barracks, mess halls, schools, and jail, we will have the opportunity to hear the stories and memories of former internees. Intergenerational discussion groups, workshops, educational speakers and a rousing cultural program, all are part of our way to revisit our history and the meaning of patriotism and loyalty. A Castle Rock hike, walking tours, communal meals and just hanging out together, allow us to make new friends and visit with old ones as part of our way of creating a new community and furthering our understanding.
Everyone is invited to share and participate as we heal our Nikkei family. People of all races, ethnicities and walks of life are warmly invited to join us and learn more about the internment experience. Come and revisit the meaning of patriotism and loyalty to create a new understanding of our world and our place in it.
