Determined Anti-War Protest in Cleveland

On Monday evening, Dec. 10, between 100-150 people marched their way through downtown Cleveland for about two hours to protest the bombing of Afghanistan and the repressive measures against Arab immigrants in the U.S.

The march was sponsored by Northeast Ohio Radical Action Network, and included anarchists, Greens, students, religious people, revolutionary communists, Food Not Bombs, and others. Students from Kent State, Akron University, Oberlin, and Case Western Reserve were in the house. 121601clevelandmarch.4.jpg

The youth really took the forefront, and the sound of drums and chants never stopped. There were puppets exposing the ugly nature of the war, and the lead banner read "No War No Racism" in English and Arabic.

The march stopped at a few symbolic places along the way, including a gas station, a news station, the federal building, and the Justice Center. People drew body outlines in chalk on the sidewalk to represent those killed in Afghanistan and the 1200 Arabs detained in the U.S. Someone played taps on the trumpet in memory of those killed in Afghanistan.

Speeches were made to highlight the effects of the war, the media blackout, fascist new laws and the racist attacks on Arabs, and the hypocrisy of the U.S. in claiming it is liberating women in Afghanistan. Everyone there felt this was one of the most energetic and youthful marches in Cleveland, and left with a new determination to resist.
