What You Gonna Do When They Come For . . .
Nicholas Heyward Sr., and the South Bronx Resisters?
After being arrested going into October 22, 2000, Nicholas Heyward Sr. and the South Bronx Resisters came out strong on October 22.
Refuse & Resist! and the October 22 Coalition to Stop Police Brutality, Repression and the Criminalization of a Generation now call on you to come out strong for them!
Send a message to those that attacked these resisters by standing with them on this day.
On October 19, 2000, as organizers for October 22 were visiting an apartment in the Bronx, police broke down the door, held everyone at gunpoint, threatened to take away one woman's child, destroyed the apartment, and arrested everyone. This building is where Malcolm Ferguson was killed by police on March 1, 2000. This building is only two blocks from where Amadou Diallo was killed. In spite of this intimidation, 48 hours after being released from jail the Bronx Resisters came to the October 22 protest in New York City with a banner reading "Amadou, Malcolm, Presente! South Bronx Against Police Brutality" signed by many people in their neighborhood.
Every year, Nicholas Heyward Sr. has been part of the community of parents who speak on October 22 across the country. He is active in Parents Against Police Brutality and the October 22 Coalition here in New York, and he was a scheduled MC for October 22, 2000. Nicholas's son, Nicholas Jr., is part of the Stolen Lives Project. He was killed by a housing cop in 1994 at 13 years of age while playing on the roof of his building with friends. Nicholas Heyward, Sr. was arrested at 6:30 a.m., in his home, the morning of October 22, 2000 on an outstanding warrant for once walking his dog without a leash! Upon release, he headed straight to the protest and took his role as one of the MCs.
