January, 2002

Houston, TX
Thursday, January 24, 2002. The engine room hosted the first Houston fundraiser for both Leonard Peltier and Mumia Abu-Jamal. The event featured performances by local bands: S.K.S (Seekers of Knowledge and Skillz) and Deconstruction Crew. Also Politically conscience Dineh band Blackfire came from Arizona, and New York hip-hop act C-Rayz Wallz took time off his national tour to perform. Pam Africa and Mario Africa also showed up to speak at the show, bringing news from Philadelphia about Mumia's case, and political commentary. Another highlight of the show was the statement from Leonard Peltier that was written specially for the event.
The show was put on as a fundraising event, and all proceeds were split down the middle for the legal defense of both Peltier and Mumia. Right now as both political prisoners face mounting legal expenses every dollar can be used for their benefit and freedom. As Mumia enters his 20th year in prison, his supporters are gearing up for a mass demonstration to demand his freedom, raise awareness on his case, and provide funds for his legal defense as his birthday approaches on April 24th. February 6th will mark Leonard Peltier's 26th year in prison, and his attorneys have filed a motion to reduce the consecutive life sentences he is serving to concurrent making him eligible for immediate parole, and prepared lawsuits against the FBI that could reveal new evidence.

December, 2001

Hamburg, Germany
On December 20, the local Free Mumia group and Students Active for Mumia in Hamburg Germany decided to answer Judge Yohn's decision on Saturday. Within 24 hours we mobilized about 70 people to join a march to the US embassy. It was loud and agressive, people were shouting "USA, hands away from Mumia". In front of the US embassy we promised that these demonstrations won't stop until Mumia is free. We are now mobilizing for a bigger demonstration on 26. January 2002.

October, 2001

Aberystwyth, Wales
Mumia Abu Jamal was inducted as an honorary member of the Guild of Students at the University of Wales, Aberystwyth on October 17, 2000. This followed a resolution placed before a General Meeting of the Guild, which represents some 7,000 students, proposed and seconded by members of the Labour Students Society (a Guild affiliated society and the Aberystwyth branch of the Labour Party's student organisation).
Aberystwyth Labour Students Chair, Marcus English, said he hoped that other students unions would follow suit as the execution of Mumia Abu Jamal would represent `an act of political and social barbarism'.

August, 2001

Philadelphia, PA
August 17, 2001 - At today's court hearing, from which Mumia Abu-Jamal was excluded at the last minute, Judge Pamela Dembe postponed any action on Mumia's request for a new Post Conviction Relief Act hearing in Pennsylvania courts.
Judge Dembe did accept Mumia's new lawyers to represent him, but said she wanted to hear more arguments on the prosecution's claim that the deadline had passed for the admission of a confession by Arnold Beverly. Beverly states that he was the actual killer of Officer Daniel Faulkner. Dembe gave Mumia's lawyers three weeks to submit an argument on why Mumia's petition is still timely, and she gave the prosecution two weeks to respond. After that, the judge will rule on whether to proceed or to dismiss Mumia's petition.
In the court room to observe the proceedings, were well known figures Ossie Davis, Jessie Jackson, Sonia Sanchez, Dick Gregory, and a number of observers from Europe.
Outside, a spirited demonstration of 1500 people demanded to know how there could be a statute of limitations on confessions when there is no statute of limitations on murder. As Ramona Africa said to the crowd, "We're not interested to what's legal we're interested in what's right!"

São Paulo, Brasil
August 18, about 70 people were present at a protest at the door of the USA embassy at São Paulo, Brasil. Our demands are the IMMEDIATE release of our brother Mummia Abu-Jamal and the end of the death penalty world-wide. The act was organized by the Brazilian Anarchist Black Cross (Cruz Negra Anarquista) - cna_sp@hotmail.com
FREE MUMIA! SMASH RACISM!

Oslo, Norway
17. august at 1700 hours local time 100 demonstrators outside the US Embassy demanded Mumia's freedom.

Hamburg, Germany
Students Active for Mumia from Hamburg Germany supports all of you that came out today to fight for justice in the case of Mumia Abu-Jamal. BE LOUD, so that Mumia can hear you! BE AGRESSIVE, so that he can feel you!
Also here in Germany are three events in support for Mumia, in Berlin, Heidelberg and Hamburg cause people here know how important it is to stand with Mumia in court. In the last 20 years the US were not interested in justice in his case. Each time when Mumia was in court the state tried to get rid of him by executing him. Why? Cause Mumia is dangerous. He speaks out against the police brutality, the oppression against black people, latino people, or people that are in the minority in general. And HEY COPS! Even though we are 1000s of miles away and can't see you we know that you're standing around there and that you can hear us. Let us say this:
WE KNOW WHAT RACIST SHIT you do all the time in Philly and WE KNOW that this will stop, because this people standing here for Mumia are THE FUTURE. AND HEY MUMIA! Can you hear all that voices in your support? You are not alone. People from all over the world are standing with you in court. We know that you're innocent, and we'll set you free, even if we have to do it BRICK BY BRICK and WALL BY WALL, we're gonna free Mumia Abu-Jamal

February, 2001

Brooklyn, NY
February 25 - Demanding Justice for Mumia Abu-Jamal! and Free Clark Kissinger Now! about 100 demonstrators rallied outside the Brooklyn Metropolitan Detention Center - a US federal prison - as part of a national show of solidarity with R2K Defendants -- those arrested during the Republican Party Convention in Philadelphia last August. The BMDC was chosen for this protest because it is the temporary home of Clark Kissinger - sentenced to prison for making a speech against the "executioner's ball" at a rally in Philadelphia on August 1.
