December 9, 2001, will mark 20 years since the incarceration of Mumia Abu-Jamal, with most of this time spent locked down on death row. Don't let the weekend of December 7-10 pass without doing something for Mumia.
To be held for twenty years, in conditions of isolation and under constant threat of execution, is itself a form of cruel and degrading torture. To have this happen as the result of a trial that Amnesty International has called a travesty of justice is an outrage against human rights. But Mumia has wielded his pen to fight back from behind the bars and stand with the people of the world.
We now call on everyone to stand with Mumia during the period of December 7 to December 10 to protest. On December 7 students can take action in their schools, with buttons, leaflets, teach-ins, and walk-outs. On December 8 the International Concerned Family & Friends of Mumia Abu-Jamal will hold a march in Philadelphia, to demand that the courts reopen Mumia's state appeal. On December 9 organizations can hold local programs throughout the country, with events ranging from pot-luck dinners to educational programs, vigils, and public actions. And on December 10 the issue of Mumia Abu-Jamal should be brought into commemorations of International Human Rights Day.
We say "stop the execution" because we must constantly remind people that Mumia remains on death row under sentence of death. We demand that his wrongful conviction be overturned to expose how Mumia was framed up by corrupt police and prosecutors in Philadelphia. And we call for Mumia to be freed, because his conviction was fraudulent and this vicious government has no right to take the life of anyone, let alone a man who represents the aspirations of people for a better world.
Join with others in making plans now. Every event, large or small, contributes to building the nationwide determined movement needed to set Mumia free.
