Hands Off Juanita Young! Drop the Charges!

Juanita Young, courageous fighter against police brutality, continues to face "criminal trespass" charges stemming from an illegal eviction engineered by her landlord and brutally carried out by officers from the NYPD 40th Precinct. Juanita’s next court date is December 9, 2004, Thursday, at Bronx Criminal Court.

The bogus criminal trespass charge still stands and is just another part of a continuing and escalating pattern of harassment Juanita and her family has suffered at the hands of the NYPD. This vicious pattern began immediately after Juanita exposed the cover-up surrounding the point-blank execution of her son, Malcolm Ferguson, in March 2000 by Officer Louis Rivera and stepped forward as a uncompromising activists against police brutality.

Mr. Johnson:

[We are/I am] outraged that Juanita Young -- the mother who has been fighting for justice for her son Malcolm Ferguson, after he was slain by the NYPD -- continues to face "criminal trespass" charges stemming from an illegal eviction engineered by her landlord and brutally carried out by officers from the 40th Precinct. This action has been part of an escalating pattern of harassment Juanita Young and her family have suffered at the hands of the NYPD since Juanita began to expose the coverup surrounding the point-blank execution of her son in March 2000 by Officer Louis Rivera.

On Saturday, June 7, 2003, at 7:25 am, officers of the 40th Precinct (accompanied by the landlord) woke Juanita out of her sleep by knocking their clubs against her bed after entering her apartment with the aid of the landlord. On the way down the stairs, arresting officer Louis Hernandez Badge#25471) pushed Ms. Young several times. Ms. Young was handcuffed behind er back, and being legally blind, was not able to clearly see the stairs. She fell down twice from the pushing by the cop, fracturing her hand on the second fall.

While in police custody, Juanita was shuttled between several precincts during the course of the day. Additionally, she was subjected to all manners of intimidation and verbal threats. In whichever precinct she found herself, officers present made it clear that she was well known for her outspokenness and her activism. At one point in her ordeal, a policeman said, "No rallies for you today." With an injured hand, Juanita was denied medical attention for several hours. After Juanita insisted on medical care, the officers retaliated by changing her charges from a simple summons to "criminal trespassing."

It is clear to [me/us] that this is a blatant attempt to silence a well-known, vocal critic of police brutality. It is hypocrisy that Juanita Young continues to face charges of "criminal trespass." These charges stand solely because there is an attempt to silence Ms. Young’s political voice. In the interest of justice, [our organization/church/union local] say: Drop All Charges Against Juanita Young!

Sincerely,

Your Name or Your Organization
