Refuse & Resist!, a national organization dedicated to opposing the whole reactionary political agenda, condemns the bombing of the building housing the Atlanta Northside Family Planning Services. This bombing was clearly meant to send a message during this time coinciding with the anniversary of the Roe v Wade decision which legalized abortion.
The debate over abortion was escalated when anti-abortionists began to murder abortion providers. According to Dr. Robert Rockwell, National Secretary of Refuse & Resist! and originally from Atlanta, "The fact that this bombing occurred in daylight and in a building filled with medical offices demonstrates the callous disregard for human life of people who choose to label themselves 'pro-life.'"
"This attack on women's reproductive freedom is part of a larger political agenda that has as its goal the outlawing of abortion. This agenda also includes the dismantling of welfare and affirmative action, anti-gay and lesbian hate crimes, attacks on immigrants, and the criminalization of a generation of people of color. This mean-spirited, scapegoating agenda has truly become a politics of cruelty."
Although it was supposed to protect clinics from anti-abortionists, the Freedom of Access to Clinic Entrances law has had little effect on the state of siege at abortion clinics. Abortion providers are harassed daily both at work and at home. In the hateful politics of today it was not surprising to learn of this bombing.
According to Dr. Rockwell, "In this time of commemoration of Roe v Wade, all people who support a woman's right to abortion have to mobilize: hold demonstrations in support of abortion and call local abortion clinics and ask them what you can do to help. The clinics have become the front line in the battle over abortion. Without clinics, there is no choice."
