The New Front of Attacks on Abortion Providers
Women's access to safe reproductive health services has been under steady attack by a growing movement of powerful, well-funded groups and individuals.
We now live in a country where:
* 42 states require parental notification for abortion in minors;
* 26 states make women wait 24 hours "to think about it";
* less than 10% of obstetrician/gynecologists are trained in abortion and most of them will never offer those services because of successful intimidation tactics;
* some reproductive health services have been completely eliminated from hospitals taken over by Catholic Hospital mergers;
* contraception is still an "out-of-pocket" expense for many women;
* clinic arsons and bombings have more than doubled while the arrests have halved;
* AND abortion providers face daily intimidation from bombs, bomb threats, arson attacks, murder and attempted murder.
More recently, these attacks have moved into the courtroom arena -- individual providers are crippled by creative harassment tactics aimed at putting them in jail, removing their licenses, or at least drowning them in legal fees.
Dr. James Pendergraft, a Florida abortion provider who provides late-term, high risk abortion services to women, now faces unjust federal charges a potential 30-year prison sentence and up to a million dollars in fines.
