October 26 saw the first National Day of Appreciation for Abortion Providers. All over the country people let providers know they are supported. In Chicago, a reception honoring providers was held at the Heartland Cafe. This event was assaulted by anti-women, anti-abortion forces led by Joe Scheidler. One* of the women-haters' huge and hideous fictitious fetus posters** broke as he scuffled with a reception organizer. The Cafe crowd broke into applause when the phony fetus photo fractured.
20 minutes later, just as the reception was set to begin, police entered the Cafe and handcuffed and arrested Jeff, a Refuse & Resist! member. He was charged with damaging the anti's poster - criminal damage to property - and if convicted, could face one year in jail or a $1000 fine.
The police arrived soon after the anti-women troops. They stood by as anti-choicers blocked the sidewalk. A women who came to honor providers was threatened with arrest as she defended herself against the picketers.
Despite these assaults. the afternoon was a success. Young people from the crowd volunteered to escort guests safely to the door, where reception organizers had metal detecters. Because the pro-women forces were prepared, all of the day's participants remained safe and sound.
Now we have to demand that the outrageous charges
against the R&R! activist be dropped.
It is never a crime to fight for women's liberation!
The anti's grotesque and fabricated images are part of an arsenal of misinformation that is used as the moral justification for murdering doctors and terrorizing women. This should not be tolerated. This is not a question of free speech; it is a question of whether women will be free. The anti-women, anti-abortion shock troops organize and mobilize with the intent of maintaining and intensifying the oppression of women.
Whoever controls reproductive rights
controls women's freedom.

* Tim Murphy is the complaintant in this case - charging that his styrofoam sign was damaged.
** these posters are images of laboratory material - which Timothy Murphy, Bea Penovich, Monica Migliorino and Edmund Miller have publically admitted to stealing from a medical lab in 1988. The images are mounted on styrofoam insulation and measure approximately 4' x 6'.
