Subject: Dr. Bruce Steir Update
Dear Friends,
Thank You for your continued support. We are happy to report that others have joined us in supporting Dr. Steir.
Thirty-two supporters from Riverside, Los Angeles, Chico, Sacramento and Bay areas watched in court Friday, July 10 as Judge Patrick Magers denied a motion to dismiss murder charges for Dr. Steir. Deborah Halbert, president of the Southwest Riverside County chapter of the National Organization for Women stated in a press release on Friday, "we are greatly concerned that the Riverside District Attorney's office has decided to prosecute this case in spite of the lack of evidence, and we are outraged at the way that the family of Sharon Hamptlon has been used and exploited by extreme anti-choice individuals who will stop at nothing in their single-minded effort to end all abortions".
A press conference was held in front of the Riverside County Courthouse, preceding court Friday. The press conference was attended by local and state- wide supporters of Dr. Bruce Steir. Carol Downer, Esq. of Dr. Bruce Steir's Defense Committee, Deborah Halbert and Tambra Turano-Davis of Southwest Riverside Chapter of the National Organization for Women, Linci Comy of Women's Choice Clinic in Oakland, and Simone Durante of Refuse and Resist! all spoke in favor of dropping murder charges against Dr. Bruce Steir. Support for dropping these charges is shared by the California Medical Association, California State National Organization for Women, National Abortion Federation, and California Abortion Rights Action League.
Carol Downer announced at the press conference that the California Medical Association, after peer review and investigation, found that "the conduct of Dr. Steir on December 13, 1996, as regarding Sharon Hamptlon cannot be characterized as criminally negligent behavior, manslaughter or any kind of criminal act."
Media in attendance of the press conference included ABC, NBC, the Los Angeles Times, Riverside Press Enterprise, the Daily Journal, Pacifica Radio, the San Bernadino Sun and the Revolutionary Worker.
Working now with local counsel, Andy Roth, defense attorney Doron Weinberg will be preparing for the next court date, scheduled for September 4 (details to follow).
Now more than ever, as Dr. Steir faces trial, Pro-Choice activists must ACT!
