NOW Action for Women's Lives Washington, DC

The National Organization for Women is declaring a state of emergency to save women's rights to self-determination and reproductive freedom. NOW is calling on activists everywhere to take part in a national campaign which we will kick off with an Emergency Action for Women's Lives in Washington, D.C., on Sunday, April 22.

FACT SHEET

PURPOSE: To show Congress and the president that supporters of safe, legal abortion, women's self determination and reproductive freedom are the overwhelming majority. Women, men and children will send an unmistakable message: We will not become the generations who both won and lost the rights to birth control and abortion. We will pledge our resources, our total commitment and our lives to saving women's reproductive rights and the right to privacy.

TIME AND PLACE: SUNDAY, APRIL 22, 2001

ASSEMBLE: 11:00 AM in Upper Senate Park (Constitution & Delaware Avenues, NE) (Nearest metro is Union Station on the Red Line.)

DELEGATIONS: Any group having 20 or more participants may be classified as a delegation. Two members of this delegation should be designated as facilitators. All delegations must register to be listed in action materials. Individual participants are also encouraged to attend!

SPONSORS: Organizations that support the Emergency Action for Women's Lives can become co-sponsors by agreeing to encourage their members to take part, organize delegations to the action and spread the word. Co-sponsors will be acknowledged at the action and in organizing and media kits, and other action materials. Co-sponsors are encouraged to make donations for expenses of the action, but contributions are not required for an organization to become a sponsor.

SPECIAL NEEDS: Special seating will be available for people with disabilities. The Emergency Action for Women's Lives program will be signed for the hearing impaired, and the march route is wheelchair accessible. Transportation will be provided for those who cannot negotiate the route. If you have special needs, please contact the Action Team at 202-628-8669, ext. 144 (voice) or 202-331-9002 (TTY).

HOUSING: Please call Washington DC Accommodations 800-503-3330 (extension 3) to reserve a room at special rate. (Please note that hotel space in Washington is limited, so call soon.)

TRAVEL: To book your air travel, please call West End Travel at 800-358-1146. (Please note that there is a $20 service fee for travel agency services.)

TRAINS: Special discounts have been negotiated with Amtrak. To receive 10 percent savings on the lowest available fare to Washington, DC, call 1-800-872-7245 and refer to fare code X-69Q-910. (Offer is valid for travel dates from April 19 through April 24, 2001. No other discounts will apply.) BUSES: Many local delegations will be organizing buses, and we will arrange for bus parking near the metro. Please contact the Action Team for tips on organizing buses or for bus contacts in your area. If you are a bus organizer, please be sure to call us to register your bus.

METRO: The nearest metro stop is Union Station, on the Red Line.
