It is my choice and my right! There is nothing wrong with choosing an abortion. We should feel proud, not guilty or ashamed, when we realize we can figure out for ourselves what we need, decide ourselves how to live our lives.
For years we have been silenced and made to feel guilty, for what? For being a woman. In the beginning of america, women and children were made to walk straight, keep our eyes down, and could not speak until spoken to.
Today, there are forces who want to push us back to those days. They intend to keep us in the dark about birth control, sex, abortion, evolution, and pretty much most of the rest of the real world.
Well, this is a new era. We are a new generation, we will walk with our heads up, look everyone in the eye and say NO MORE! I will not be made to feel guilty. This is my body, my blob of tissue, my choice. We will not back down.
They say that women are not capable of deciding if they want an abortion.
They say that the places we spend our time are the "Gates of Hell."
They say that our generation is all ignorant criminals beyond hope.
They claim that this is how we think: "Why save sex until marriage? Why not shoot someone who has the brand of sneakers you like?"
Who are these people? Why do they say that we can't think for ourselves? They call themselves "Operation Rescue" or "Right to Life" and they're just hoping that we are too dumb to figure out that they are not really "pro-life." That they are really part of a hateful movement which bombs abortion clinics, murders doctors and terrorizes women daily for stepping outside our "place" and choosing abortion.
No matter how much they say that they are guided by love, even if they believe this, the fact is that:
Outlawing abortion kills women!
Besides, the real question has never been whether or not abortion will exist (it's been around 1000s of years), but what will women have to go through to control our own lives and bodies?
Parenthood can be beautiful, but to choose not to become a parent is not a crime, and it should not be punishable by death!
If Operation Rescue has your town on their hit-list for harassment, you don't have to lie down and take it. Whether lots of kids wanna take action or it's just you so far, there's zillions of things you can do to make sure these nuts don't get a minute's peace.
Be creative! Brainstorm actions for your school and write to tell us how you're doing. Here are some ideas to get you started:
If O.R. isn't in your town yet, don't just count your blessings! Make good use of advance notice about these dorks by using time now to educate your friends and classmates about why we need to protect abortion rights and women's rights. And remember just who these people are - members of a larger right-wing movement which has priorities ranging from public education cuts to scapegoating immigrants.
Keep in mind, you're not alone - so start wherever you are!
