I want to encourage any pro-choice/feminist activists who get wind of this in their town to get over to your high school and make sure the fanatical sensationalism of the anti-choice contingent isn't the only point of view high schoolers hear about in March, April and May of 1997 (that's right, Operation Rescue demonstrations will continue until the end of the school year). GET IN TOUCH WITH PRO-CHOICE PEOPLE YOU KNOW WHO ATTEND OR WORK IN HIGH SCHOOLS AND SEE IF YOU CAN HELP THEM TO ORGANIZE EVENTS AND ACTIVITIES TO COUNTER OPERATION RESCUE -- SUCH AS COUNTER-DEMONSTRATIONS, PRO-CHOICE SPEAKERS, OR SIMPLY THE CIRCULATION OF PRO-CHOICE PUBLICATIONS.
I think we can meet Operation Rescue at the schools and make the pro-choice voice heard, if we can get the word out. First and foremost, feel free to re-post this alert widely. I just got confirmation on this yesterday, so I don't know if it's known in the pro-choice community yet. Next, find out if Operation Rescue is coming to a high school near you. It appears that Massachusetts is going to see a lot of action. Is there anyone on the list from Hampshire College? I know there's a great group of pro-choice activists there who won't let Terry Randall carry the day in their neighborhood. For others who may hear about some OR activism at their local high school, I'd like to offer help in the form of ACLU Reproductive Freedom Project factsheets and information, which I can snail mail or preferably e-mail to you. We have information from the most basic (The Right to Choose: A Fundamental Liberty) to more specific, targeted factsheets, like an in-depth look at parental involvement laws. I would also suggest contacting your local Planned Parenthood for more flyers that will help you and high-school students stand up for the pro-choice point of view.
For my part, I'm going to start the ball rolling by forwarding this message to my e-mail list of student activists and to an ACLU list of activists. I'll also be preparing factsheets so that anyone who expects a high school visit by Operation Rescue can get them from me as of Tuesday. Please contact me if you have additonal information or if you want to lend a hand from March 3, 1997 through May of 1997 by standing up to Operation Rescue and making sure the real facts are out there.
