From Abortion Rights to Social Justice: Building a Movement for Reproductive Freedom

Sixteenth Annual Conference for Student and Community Activists

April 5 - April 7, 2002

Hampshire College, Amherst Massachusetts

Sponsored by the Civil Liberties and Public Policy Program and the Population and Development Program at Hampshire College

Reproductive rights are under siege in the U. S. Across the country, abortion providers and clinics operate under constant threat. To date, there have been seven murders, and over 80% of clinics have experienced harassment and threats of violence. Congress and state legislatures continue to pass restrictions on access to abortion, especially for low-income and young women, while harsh welfare regulations punish impoverished women for having children.

This conference has a broad understanding of reproductive rights, encompassing the struggle for racial equality, economic justice, gay/lesbian/bisexual/transgender rights, environmental justice, disability rights, freedom from violence, access to education, healthcare and childcare, welfare rights, and support for immigrants. In the wake of September 11 the conference will also address foriegn policy issues that directly impact women's lives in the U.S. and abroad.

The conference is open to everyone. It is intended as a forum for learning and networking for all ages, experiences and background knowledge.
